I am bothered by the term TOY CARS. It puts images in my head of a baby sitting on the floor cranking the handle of a Jack In the Box. I prefer something like Hobbists cars or something similar.

I agree with you Dennis, they should be referred to as "Competition Slot Cars" or "Professional Slot Cars."

I’m sorry I didn’t mean to offend anyone by calling them toys. A hobbyist car I can see. But I played with them as a child as a toy and now as a hobby.

Call them whatever you want, it is just a term I used for the likes of the NASCAR class, with a few exceptions it is hard to call them competition cars. For me, the frustration outweighed the fun. Its not for everyone, I was very happy to hang out and marshal while the rest of you had "fun".

I think it was Jerry who first referred to what we were all doing was 'playing with toy cars'. Well, here's the dictionary's definition of 'Toy'; toy | toi | noun
1 an object for a child to play with, typically a model or miniature replica of something: [as modifier] : a toy car. • an object, especially a gadget or machine, regarded as providing amusement for an adult: in 1914 the car was still a rich man's toy.
Cheers to all of us still young enough at heart to play together with our toys!

Same issue with R/C cars, But what we are doing is "Scale Model Racing" And yes there are racers who do earn a living from racing and promoting cars.

If you look at the boxes your slot cars came in, you will find out what each company will call their cars. I have one that in bold letters, it says, Caution - Electric Toy. Others refer to their cars as Model car. One says, This product is designed for adult model makers and collectors. Others will have this is not a Toy.
Age restriction is from not under 3 years of age to 14 years of age and older.
A magazine I used to get was called "Model Car Racing".
I don't refer to my cars as toys, but slot cars. The cars that I may refer to as toys are from Carrera, Scalextric and SCX. All use 18k motors and plastic wheels. When FLY Model Cars came out, their cars had so much detail they were some of the first cars that would be considered, "Racing Model Cars", even though these cars still used 18k motors and had plastic wheels.

I now have many Vintage slot cars and there again some of those early cars would be "toyish" in appearance. Early Eldon and Strombecker cars did not have much detail in their bodies.

Well I didn't want to start a ruckus over this. I just stated that I don't care for using the term toy when talking slot cars. Use whatever term suits you......just not around me..LOL

Don't really know why anyone would even care about what term is used to describe these. All that matters is if you enjoy "Playing" with them!
